Week 1 - Check!

Date Posted: Dec 12, 2011

This has definitely been a good week. A good week of adjusting and learning how things work, how the culture works and how to not die from the heat -- no, but seriously. I've learned a lot of Spanish and I am getting more fluent each day.

This week I've done and seen a lot of different things, things varying from passing out parasite medication to children in Xiloa to attending a church service in Nagarote. Each of the things that I've done this past week have helped show me just how passionate this culture is to worship, how free they are from the chains of being too busy, and on top of that, how they are so loving.

There is a lady named Maria, who we call Grandma here. She takes care of her two grand-daughters because their mother passed away a while back. She has diabetes and when I first checked her sugar levels they were ringing in at 550+ and that was with a pill that was supposed to help control the sugar levels and keep it down. So we took her to central salud (the health center) and they told her she needed to switch to insulin -- like we were telling her.

The next day we went to check on her at her house and we tested her sugar again and even with the insulin it was 527. So I've come to the conclusion that because of the diets here -- whose staple is rice (it has a lot of carbs which converts into sugar) -- she needs to be on a sliding scale but that would require her to have her own glucos meter. But she's showing signs of becoming senile and has symptoms of alzheimers so we don't think she'll be able to work the meter.

Well, that's all I got right now. I can't wait until December 17 for UNITE at New Hope Baptist Church -- which I'll be joining via LiveStream.

I love you guys! :D
