Assurance in What?

Date Posted: Dec 01, 2011

Three weeks remain as I prepare to embarq on the journey of a lifetime and I can't express the excitement that I'm overwhelmed with when I think about how time is flying by! And in that excitement I tend to look toward others for encouragement as well as assurance in the things that I'm doing are right. However, is that the right mindset?

I was reading in 1 Chronicles this afternoon and after skipping past all the genealogical records I got to chapter 10 which recorded the death of King Saul. His life was ended by his own hands however in an attempt to retain his honor in his last living moments. However in fear the armor-bearer did nothing and the scriptures say that Saul "fell upon his sword" and when the armor-bearer found this he fell upon his own sword. PAUSE.

Ok, so I'm examining this scripture and the one obvious and evident thing is this: this was a double-suicide. What type of religion would go into detail an act such as one of this magnitude? I love how Christianity goes against the odds and delivers to us information and a belief system that does not promise materialistic blessings in abundance but trials and tribulations!

If we jump all the way to the end of the chapter we find the ultimate reason for Sauls death. God. It is explained that Saul was not faithful to God that Saul did not confer with God but rather with mediums and that Saul found his assurance in those mediums with whom he spoke.

The thought that popped up into my head was this - in what do I find my assurance? Is it in God? or Man? For me, I tend to look toward others for confirmation and assurance rather than going to God in prayer and seeking His will. I like to take the easy way out and ask someone what they think and jump into something with what the person shared with me.

Thankfully, this upcoming trip is not one of those things that I went to other people for advice about. It was something that God actually confirmed with me about. But I want to challenge you, right now, in what do you find your assurance in? Is it a medium around you? Sports? Boyfriends/Girlfriends? Popularity? or is it in the true source of assurance? God?

Be blessed my friends and pray for assurance from the One who knows our way,
